Alan Segal, Chief Digital & Technology Officer at AMS Solutions (AMS), leads the strategy and delivery for technology platforms and AI-enabled services across the global talent acquisition and HR firm.
Alan studied computer sciences at university before completing an MBA with a focus on AI management and leadership.
He started his career in product development but quickly recognised he preferred understanding how products drive value for people and organisations.
"I quickly noticed the power to influence and drive change through intelligent systems. I was inspired by how the software and tools organisations use can deliver a meaningful impact to employees and beyond, I enjoyed looking at how products drive value for people and for organisations much, much more," Alan says.
Alan has worked in services, sales and technology, holding positions including CIO and CTO roles. He spent time as an independent management consultant providing CPO services for large organisations before returning to technology leadership.
"It was important to me to understand how to drive value through the enterprise and understand the business. To do so, I needed to be in the business, and so I spent time in different functions, learning and understanding them, building experiences, deepening my own learning, so I can really understand how they work," Alan says.
The experience across different business functions taught him about leadership and working with people.
Alan describes himself as a believer in servant leadership, focused on understanding people to deliver what they need to be successful. This approach has enabled him to drive large-scale transformations with successful outcomes, including two start-up organisations and two public listings.
Two pieces of advice guide his approach. The first is to start with listening rather than telling. The second is to maintain a mindset that learning never stops.
"I actually take that to my daily life, every single day," Alan says. "I look at how do I find time to learn something new, whether it's about somebody, or it's about the industry or technology, but how do I weave an ever-evolving learning mindset into my day to day.
“It's an important concept I actively share with my colleagues – from my direct reports and team members to all my colleagues. Learning is a journey, and it's not an end destination.”
Professionally and personally, Alan cherishes the role of human connection.
“For me, what really adds value in my life is human connection,” he says. “It's about having the opportunity to meet people and build relationships.
“But also human connection beyond the world of work is fundamental for me.
“My family is super important to my success. I wouldn't be where I am if it weren’t for them.
“From tolerating the constant travel and supporting me to do what truly inspires me and understanding how important my work is to me: they support me entirely.
“We cannot be effective leaders if we cannot build human connection, right?”
