Lynne Burns has been appointed Group HR Director at Barclays, bringing senior people leadership experience from Linklaters and HSBC

Barclays has strengthened its executive leadership team with the appointment of Lynne Burns as Group HR Director.

Bringing experience from Linklaters, HSBC and Royal Bank of Scotland, Lynne will oversee the bank's global people strategy as financial services organisations continue to navigate workforce transformation and changing talent priorities.

Lynne succeeds Tristram Roberts, who is retiring after nearly 13 years at Barclays, including more than a decade leading the bank's HR function.

In her new role, Lynne will help shape the organisation's people agenda as Barclays continues to modernise its operations and strengthen collaboration across the business.

Working closely with the executive leadership team, she will lead Barclays' global HR function, overseeing initiatives spanning leadership development, talent management, organisational effectiveness and employee engagement.

The role will see her align the bank's people strategy with its wider business objectives as Barclays continues to deliver its long-term growth plans.

HR leadership experience

Lynne joins Barclays from Linklaters, where she served as Chief People Officer. Prior to that, she spent seven years at HSBC in a number of senior HR leadership roles, including Group Head of Talent, Global Head of HR for Global Commercial Banking and Global Banking & Markets, and Head of HR for HSBC UK.

Earlier in her career, she also held leadership positions at Royal Bank of Scotland, giving her more than 30 years' experience across banking and professional services.

Commenting on the appointment, Barclays Group Chief Executive CS Venkatakrishnan said: "Lynne brings more than 30 years of experience leading HR teams, driving performance, transformation, culture change and Board engagement.

"Her depth of experience will be invaluable as we continue to modernise and simplify how we operate, strengthen connections across the Group, and build a high-performing, inclusive culture that supports the next phase of our strategic plan."

CS also paid tribute to Tristram, thanking him for his contribution over almost 13 years with the bank.

He credited Tristram with leading the HR function through a period of significant change while helping transform it into a modern, technology-enabled function, underlining the foundations Lynne will now build upon.

During his tenure, Tristram helped steer Barclays' people strategy through a period of significant organisational change, supporting the bank as it adapted to evolving workforce expectations and an increasingly digital operating environment.

Strengthening leadership and culture

The appointment comes at a pivotal time for Barclays as the bank continues to deliver its long-term strategy, with people and culture playing an increasingly important role in driving business performance.

Alongside ongoing investment in digital capabilities and operational efficiency, the bank is focused on attracting and retaining skilled talent, developing future leaders and fostering an inclusive, high-performing culture.

Lynne's experience leading complex HR functions across banking and professional services positions her to support these priorities as Barclays continues to evolve its workforce for the future.

The leadership change comes amid continued investment in people leadership across the Barclays Group. In April, Barclaycard Payments appointed Caroline Smith as Chief People Officer, reinforcing the organisation's focus on strengthening its people strategy as it continues to grow.

Across the wider Group, Barclays has also stepped up investment in learning and development initiatives to help employees build the skills needed for AI and other emerging technologies, reflecting a broader commitment to future workforce capability.

That focus on long-term capability extends beyond workforce development. Barclaycard Payments has also continued to evolve following Barclays' strategic partnership with Brookfield Asset Management (BAM), which is supporting the transformation of the payments business into a standalone entity.

The collaboration is intended to accelerate growth, broaden the range of services offered and enhance the experience for both existing and prospective clients, highlighting the wider business priorities that Burns will help support through the Group's people strategy.
