Siemens has received a platinum LEED certification for its Mitras manufacturing plant in Mexico as part of its commitment to sustainable design

Siemens’ Mitras manufacturing plant in Mexico has earned a Platinum certification, granted by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system for sustainable buildings.

This 18,700-square-metre complex has become the first Siemens factory to obtain LEED Platinum, as well as the first industrial building in Mexico to achieve LEED Platinum for Building Design and Construction: New Construction under LEED v4.

As the world’s most widely used green building certification system, LEED is applied in more than 180 countries to evaluate projects on criteria including energy efficiency, water management and overall financial performance.

A platinum rating is reserved for projects demonstrating exceptional results within these metrics.

Judith Wiese, Chief People and Sustainability Officer of Siemens, says of the certification on LinkedIn: “For more than 130 years, Siemens has been part of Mexico’s growth. Today, the country remains a strategic hub with highly skilled people enabling us to advance our own sustainability commitment while delivering innovation at scale for our customers.”

People-first design at Siemens Mitras

The Mitras manufacturing plant was announced in 2022 and inaugurated in 2024 to strengthen and expand Siemens’ production capabilities in northern Mexico . Based in Nuevo León, this plant integrates sustainable practice with high-quality and comfortable working conditions to improve wellbeing for employees

It is specifically designed to ensure high air quality, enhanced comfort and plenty of daylight for employees, as well as energy usage being 100% renewable.

Factory workstations are also designed to be adjustable to prioritise worker comfort, and digital capabilities also improve workplace safety to create a working environment that is less physically stressful.

The Mitras factory also integrates a wide range of digitalisation and sustainable infrastructure technologies developed by Siemens – including digital monitoring platforms and energy management solutions.

These solutions, according to Siemens, are helping to optimise production processes and improve operational transparency across the floor.

The site has reduced power consumption by around 40% when compared to reference industrial buildings, and generates around 800 Mwh of renewable energy annually through on-site solar production.

Judith says the success of this factory offers “a blueprint for the future of sustainable manufacturing,” for its high sustainability standards and prioritisation of employee wellbeing.

Sustainable manufacturing capabilities

Siemens Mitras is home to some of the company’s most advanced manufacturing facilities in northern Mexico.

The Mitras plant carries out plastic injection moulding, as well as manufacturing low-voltage electrical components used in circuit protection and electrical technologies to build more resilient infrastructure.

According to Siemens, this LEED certification is a key indicator of how sustainability and industrial competitiveness can advance together – with the company highlighting that it believes responsible operations are shaping the future of work for many industries.

Made in Mexico

This milestone builds on other recognitions Siemens has received regarding its manufacturing presence in Mexico.

In November 2025, the company received the Made in Mexico certification from the Ministry of Economy – highlighting the quality, innovation and national technological value of the products it manufactures in the country.

The company joined more than 600 companies that have this certification, which are committing to the industrial development of Mexico.

Alejandro Preinfalk, President and CEO of Siemens Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean

Alejandro Preinfalk, President and CEO of Siemens Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, said of the recognition: “This recognition is a testament to what we achieve when we combine talent, technology and vision.

“Currently, our six manufacturing sites integrate advanced technology and sustainable practices, transferring knowledge and adding national value to global chains. We want Mexican manufacturing to continue to be synonymous with innovation and sustainability”.
