Here's how UKG helped FJ Management standardise HR across 17,000 employees, spanning convenience stores, banks, refineries, and hotels

HR, pay and workforce management platform, UKG, has partnered with FJ Management to strengthen its HR operations.

FJ Management, which has more than 17,000-employees, has teamed up with UKG to deliver faster and more consistent employee experiences for its workforce, which covers a number of different business models.

As a privately held, family-owned holding company with employees across 28 US states, FJ Management oversees a wide range of frontline-heavy businesses, including Maverik convenience stores, a multi-state bank, an oil refinery with union operations, hotels and med spas.

Each of these businesses has industry-specific staffing models, turnover patterns and employee demographics – which required a platform flexible enough to serve a diverse set of labour complexity.

By partnering with UKG, the business is said to have “transformed” the way it delivers HR service and employee support, by providing “faster, smarter, and more consistent” experiences across its portfolio.

“Around the clock” employee support

To achieve this workforce transformation, FJ Management deployed UKG Pro's full suite – a workforce management, recruiting and onboarding tool.

Utilising this technology allowed the business to standardise its processes across its fragmented operations, while automating responses to policy questions and workplace inquiries. Previously, these tasks would have required manual intervention from HR teams.

"The platform has fundamentally changed how our employees access HR support around the clock, regardless of which business they work for," said Amanda Poitra, Chief Human Resources Officer at FJ Management. "That consistency across such diverse operating companies has been transformative for both our teams and our people."

Amanda Poitra, Chief Human Resources Officer at FJ Management describes this as a “breakthrough solution” that has “dramatically improved” how the business’s employees receive support.

As a result, employees receive “around the clock” support across the diverse operating companies.

“Achieving consistency and responsiveness across vastly different work environments is one of the organisation’s most important HR mandates,” she adds. “UKG lets us rise to the challenge of accommodating the different needs and demographics across our businesses, especially in frontline-heavy environments.”

Handling scale without burning out HR

Across its industry portfolios, FJ Management operates a shared services HR function responsible for payroll, benefits, compliance and HRIS technology.

The platform handled nearly 78,000 employee questions – from policy clarifications to routine HR inquiries – with most getting answered within an hour. For an HR team juggling payroll, benefits and compliance across fundamentally different business models, that speed and consistency proved transformative.

“By reducing the volume of routine inquiries flowing to HR teams, our HR leaders now spend more time where they add the greatest value,” said Amanda. “We have gained valuable time to focus on culture-building, leadership development, engagement initiatives, and recruiting, all areas that directly influence business performance.

“People Assist not only dramatically improves our frontline employee experience but also enhances HR’s strategic impact across all our operating companies.”

Data-driven decisions across the portfolio

UKG's analytics and reporting capabilities also give FJ Management visibility into its workforce patterns across its operating companies. HR and business leaders are therefore better equipped to spot trends and make decisions grounded in data.

Amanda adds that UKG’s data analytics enable FJ Management to “very quickly” "pull together” business intelligence and workforce insights which are related to staffing needs, time-to-hire and turnover. This can then be provided to the business controllers, presidents and HR leaders.

“We're able to create consistency and processes across industries,” she added.

“We’ve been a UKG customer for more than a decade, and we’ve been able to transform the experience from tactical HR, pay, and time management to a true operating platform that gives us a real-time view into our frontline workforce.”
